Shriners International is, at its core, a fraternity of sorts.

Created in 1870 in Manhattan by Walter M Fleming, and Billy Florence. The idea and theme came from Florence who attended a Near Eastern party hosted by an Arabian diplomat. While Fleming created the fraternity name, initiation rites, rules and rituals along with the structure. Together, the two designed the fraternity emblem; a red fez with a black tassel which also acts as the official headgear of the shriners.

The first chapter, Mecca Shriners, met in New York City in 1872. As word spread about the fledgling organization, members quickly gathered and soon the organization spread across the U.S. In the early 1900s, membership spread into Canada, Mexico and Panama. Today, Shriners International is a fraternity with nearly 200 temples in several countries, along with thousands of clubs around the world all dedicated to the principles of brotherly love, relief and truth.
